about

Two poems by William Blake (1757-1827) – ‘London’ and ‘A Poison Tree’ – are the starting point of this composition. The poems have been recited and recorded, and the resulting audio was used as musical material. The words possess meaning, but at the same time can be interpreted as pure sound. By editing the text and by putting it into a certain context, emphasis is placed sometimes on the sound, sometimes primarily on meaning. The piece is about birth, life and death. In the opening sequence, unintelligible fragments of the poems appear, like the way the world appears to a newborn: incomprehensible, sometimes frightening, but fascinating. In the center part the words are intelligible, but because they relate in different ways to the context and to each other, several layers of interpretation co-exist. The final part is about old age –
words disintegrate, lose their meaning and become elusive. A certain sadness prevails.
